Can You Imagine?

Sinkhole in Guatemala City, February 23, 2007

You're lying in your home in your bed, sleeping or whatever, and suddenly the ground disappears from beneath your home. Then your home disappears and you with it. This is a sinkhole that mysteriously appeared in Guatemala City this year. Several homes were swallowed and some people that lived here are missing. Aside from all of the usual worries of being a human being in today's world, the world could literally fall right out from under you. We think the ground is so solid beneath our feet, but is it really? Who knows what kind of activity has been going on under there. Is it natural? Could it be the result of acid rain in limestone which, I'm guessing, makes up most of the terra firma in that area?

The thing is absolutely huge. They could throw people in there and never find them again. Amazing!

I wonder if they've been able to measure how far down it goes. Surely someone's thought of hovering above in a helicopter and lowering a camera and light to look.

I hope that's not what's going to happen to the Courts Building. You should see the sidewalks. I think it's gotten worse.

A later reference I saw said it goes down about 330 feet. Uh, that would be a 33 story buildig that could fit in there.
